Visiting the incredible dune-shaped deserts outside the city of Abu Dhabi is a must for a trip to the capital of the United Arab Emirates, but to get there you have to drive off-road. Previously, it was better to take a Ride with an experienced 4WD off-road driver, but now Abu Dhabi has launched six autonomous off-road tracks designed for all levels of driving experience.
The routes, which are part of the offroad Driving project in Abu Dhabi, stretch across the sand around the emirate of Abu Dhabi, including near the oasis Of Al Ain and through Al Dhafra, located on the edge of the forbidden empty neighborhood and used as an otherworldly backdrop for a number of films, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens 2015.
“Abu Dhabi is a wonderful destination for adventurers and those who want to connect with nature through its varied and rugged landscapes,” said Ali Hassan Al Shaiba, executive Director of tourism and Marketing at Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism. “Off-road driving in Abu Dhabi offers adventurers the opportunity to explore the beautiful scenery of Abu Dhabi and experience exciting and varied adventures throughout the year.’
The trips take travelers through tourist sites and wildlife areas, including places where they can experience camels and gazelles, as well as secluded places to set up an overnight accommodation camp.
The shortest route takes about four hours, but the longest that crosses some of the largest sand dunes in the country could take two days to travel completely. For safety reasons, drivers must drive in a convoy of at least three vehicles and receive safety checklists and instructions. Local tour operators offer desert driving courses for those who have no prior knowledge.
